Vietnam-era SAW?

I'm very intrigued by the OP's timeline idea, but I agree that the US would have to undergo a significant doctrinal change. Perhaps a intensive counter-insurgency war in the Philippenes after WWII?

That's more what I'm trying to go with. I'm trying to find a good way to butterfly Korea. I want the US to have more of a focus towards both a professional military and modern infantry tactics that mix both counter-insurgency and mechanized warfare early on.

The centerpiece of my TL would be a limited maneuver/counter-insurgency war involving the US (in a similar vein to the OTL South African/Rhodesian Bush Wars) that occurs after Congo moves wholely into the Soviet Bloc with the survival of Patrice Lamumba.
