Victory at Gallipoli

Now WI the Commonwealth forces won at Gallipoli? The British would have that landing they wanted, but the problem is the Turks are not going to simply stand down. Can we expect trench warfare deeper into turkish land, or would it really be the knockout blow everyone expected?

Well, first one must define what "win" means. If a British win at Gallipoli means that the Dardenelles and Constantinople are under British control, then I think that it would the knock-out blow to the Turks. The Brits would now be able to move supplies through the Dardenelles into Russia, and keep them in the game. It would also have very interesting effects on the Arab Middle East. In 1915 the Sykes-Picot agreement between the British, French and Russians, had not yet been signed, but the agreement with Sharif Hussein for a united Arab kingdom covering OTL Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, maybe Israel-Palestine, and Saudi Arabia, had already been made. I don't know if the Turks would throw in the towel, but they would certainly have suffered a massive setback, and I think that retaking Constantinople ranked much higher than fighting Arabs.

So Russia stays in the war, the war probably ends early with no American involvement, and the Arabs are able to establish their own Kingdom under British protection.

Thoughts?

even if the British manage to get to Constantinople, that does not mean that the British will be able to conquer -- or to keep -- Constantinople.

...despite how most folks assume that they're all one and the same.

Please read the Rule Britannia TL, which is my great labor of love. The POD is a British victory at Gallipoli.

I always find it strange that the french get airbrushed out of that particular campaign, anyone know why?

a victory would most definitely lead to a capture of constantinople, depending on the casualties, we could see an ottoman withdrawal, either way their empire is finished, i suspect it would lead to a more divided anatolia with greece, italy, britain, france, and possibly even russia all taking their shares of turkey, with maybe even an independent kurdistan later on.

a victory would also free up allied troops in the mid-east and maybe cause a faster end to war, but nothing major in the west, but in the east, russia would definately stay in the war and possibly survive as a tsarist state

As I point out in the Rule Britannia TL, the main impact of an Allied victory at Gallipoli would be in the Balkans. Bulgaria, Greece and Romania were trying to decide which side to come in on. The result could have been the creation of a Balkan front against the Central Powers- stiffened by a British expeditionary force. The result would have been a massive addition of pressure against the Central Powers.

So the French navy wasn't involved? No wonder the RN succeeded then... :D

By not having the French Navy there, you needlessly weaken your invasion effort. The French Navy dominated the Mediterranean, so it would be illogical for them not to be involved at all in a naval battle inside of their agreed upon naval sphere of influence for the duration of the war.

Sure, but I guess the Allies would accept with a reasonable alternative, like the Empire withdrawing from the war or joining the Allies, or accepting a harsh peace that kept a rump Ottoman state.
