Victor Emmanuel pulls a Juan Carlos?

A fairly simple WI - WI in 1922 when Mussolini marches on Rome, Victor Emmanuel III grows a pair, signs the declaration of martial law and makes a speach on the radio denouncing Mussolini's "treason," and calling for his arrest.

The records indicate that the Italian army units in the area of Rome could have dealt with the Blackshirts. What would have been the reaction of the world at large to a crackdown? What would its repercussions have been?

An interesting possibility might be if Victor Emmanuel then goes on to use the situation to justify a "state of emergency" and claim greater power for himself...

Well, anyways, any ideas as to how this might go?

It's be hard to say.

Needless to say events in Europe are going to be completely different. Hitler modeled his own rise to power on Mussolini's for example.

I'd ask Geekhis Khan, but this otherwise means Civil War in 1922 and well into 1923 even, with Socialists fighting Fascists and the Government.

I thought by pulling a Juan Carlos you mean he's sidelined as the head of state but after Mussolini's regime falls he returns to turn Italy back into a constitutional monarchy.
