Venetian Translatium Imperii

After the sack of constantinople during the IV crusade (1204), Enrico Dandolo (Venetian Doge, the one who organized the thing and got the bigger share of the spoils) becomes ambitious and declare that the eastern half of the Roman Empire has undergone a Translatium Imperii, from Constantinople to Venice, such as the western half has from Rome to Acquisgrana (or wherever the german emperor lives).
The Pope is only happy to accept this and crowning him as:
1) this introduce a counterbalance to the german emperor in italy
2) get rid of orthodox doctrine having a link to the Roman Empire
3) by crowning both the wester and the eastern emperors, he gain prestige
The so-called blind emperor, however will die in just a few months (Enrico Dandolo was old and almost blind, andied in 1205)

A Doge proclaiming himself Emperor? I am sure that Venetian Nobility wouldnt like this at all... Marino Faliero who tried that in 14th century end up deposed and decapitated... Plus the incumbent Pope Innocens III was against sacking Constantinople in the first place and excommunicated the leaders of IV Crusade for doing that... He turned a blind eye though after serious bribing but still was against in that what h considered an abomination... Besides Papacy didnt want to eliminate Orthodoxy at all... Popes wanted the Orthodoxs to recognise his authority as Universal Bishop and all the other matters (use of unleven bread, filioque, etc.) could be solved in a Council...

Edit: If i am not mistaken (i have forgot most of my latins) the correct spelling would be Translatio Imperii... not Translatium...

The Holy Roman Emperor is also likely to see this as a direct challenge to his authority, and that presumably won't end well for Venice.

Agree... If the elderly Doge comes up with such an action he will be hated by 1st) Holy Roman Empire... 2nd) His nobility and the Council of Ten in Venice and 3rd) by both his "subjects" in the former Byzantine Empire and the Empire of Nicaea... And maybe the Pope if he cant continue bribing him to turn a blind eye to the sacking of the Byzantine Empire by Crusaders...
