Vatican City solution for Tibet?

This might sound like an idea for a Harry Turtledove novel, but could the Dalai Lama somehow end up with his own tiny state (not a lot morethan the palace in Lhasa) like the pope did, while the rest of Tibet officially belongs to CHina, whether Communist or something else?

BTW: I got this idea out of the "Is the Pope a conversative version of the Dalai Lama-Thread)

Probably not. The Chinese that invaded Tibet were quite eager to rid the place entirely of the old theocratic/feudal elite.

The analogy with the Vatican doesn't really ring true, as Tibetan Buddhism doesn't dominate China in the same way Roman Catholicism dominates China, and there are no outside Powers willing/able to demand China spare a scrap of Tibet for the Lamas.

I don't think there is anything the Dalai Lama can offer the Chinese government. Mussolini was indifferent, but needed the legitimacy the pope could confer (same reason Hitler made a concordate - he hated the Church). Beijing can simply put the lid down on Tibet right now, they don't need to worry about the acceptance of anby spiritual leader because they have their own source of legitimacy, and the majority of their perople doesn't care.

Now, one thing I could see is that kind of arreangement made for the next Dalai Lama. See how generously China endows this reasonable man! Behold the tolerance and forbearasnce of the People's Republic! How dare the usurper in Nepal claim to speak for Tibet!

Won't the next Dalai Lama be a little child ?

The Chinese government claims they will choose the reincarnation. The real Dalai Lama is suggesting ebing reborn as a women, a legislature or anything outside of China.
