Utopianism More Vouge Than Dystopianism

Dystopianism is quite vouge among the alternate history set, generally. (I'm not taliking about this particular site.) See Sterlings Draka Series.

What PoDs could make Utopianism more interesting to readers. Where writers compete, not to see who could make a society even worse than the Nazis, but instead compete to see who could devise the greatest bliss for humanity.....and get readers! Or is bad news the only news?

People like things they aren't experiencing. Why do we like Dystopia? Because we're a bunch of smacked asses living in the bosom of the Western world at the height of technological and social development. We're secure and ok, and as such things going badly interests us.

The opposite would be true. Have people live through bad things and they seek Utopianism and happiness. You know why your great grandpa liked Billie Holiday and easy listening? Because he saw his best friend's head explode right in front of him during the war and woke up with death metal lyrics in his head every morning, so he didn't need to hear some long hair screaming about his problems.

Make the world suck, and people look for better things.

That is not a hardened rule because they could also go the opposite route from that. There are two types of entertainment: that which is escapist and that which is reflective. What I've mentioned in the escapist, but people are also interested in that which is reflective. It all depends on the person and you have both types of things existing side by side in the culture.
