USSR protects Mossadeq

The Socialistic Nationalist Mohammed Mossadeq of Iran was removed from power there in 1953 by a coup.
The Coup was payed from according to sources by the United States and the UK because Mossadeq had nationalized the Iran Oilfields and that UK/US feared he would open up the country to the Russians. But what if Mossadeq had asked Stalin for protection and that he had send troops to Iran to protect Mossadeq in return to iranian oil. Thusly realizing in the American/UK sponsered coup failing.

What then?

No way in hell would that happen:

First, Iran had been occupied by russia in 1941.

Second, as a result, iran was very anti communist.

This is all happening during the Korean War...

There is an excellent chance that Iran could well erupt into a flashpoint between the Soviet Union and the United States, since the PoD here is Mossadeq swinging to the Soviet Union. The UK and USA would never have swallowed it.

And they'd probably send in troops...

This is going to lead to a second proxy war raging between the Soviet Union and United States--and one that stands an excellent chance of turning into a Third World War. Fortunately, the Soviets still have very few nuclear weapons and their manpower is still hurting from WW2, so this conflict might be nicer than later scenarios would suggest.

But this could be the big one right there...

Funny how would play out?
