I always found Bukharin surprisingly lucid for a Bolshevik. He advocated the continuation of the NEP and told farmers to "enrich" themselves. He did not believe collectivization would benefit the USSR, at least in the short term, and even broke with Stalin when he pushed through with it. Maybe if you could get him in power somehow, he would be pragmatic and smart enough to be a Deng Xiaoping style figure who comes up with Socialism with Russian Characteristics.
