After the end of WW2, car companies in the USA did everything they could to prevent public transport from becoming the main method of transportation, so that everyone would buy cars instead. They even bought and dismantled entire trolley networks. They also "encouraged" the government to spend lots of money on highway/interstate construction. It worked. What if they had failed, or not tried in the first place? Would public transportation be much bigger than it is today? What would have been the repercussions?
