Sorry, forgot to reply on that point. That might be a possible route but given the degree of hostility towards Catholicism in the US until recently I don't know how likely it would be. [Unless possibly you had a protestant Irish candidate who advocated supporting Irish independence]. That could quite possibly complicate matters a lot, especially if say there was an ongoing naval race and tensions in other areas at the time.
