US Presidential Losers

Hi all,

Here's a list of all the people who lost (or ran unopposed) in a US presidential race.

What kind of country is this? Clearly one with a one-term informal rule notably broken by Bryan, Dewey, and Stevenson, one in which the Republican Party is a late bloomer, one without a Civil War, perhaps? Or even a Northern secession?

Obviously butterfly genocide, but perhaps interesting to consider.

I'd feel that this America would have to be fairly chaotic, in the 60-70s alone you'd need to have America elect Barry Goldwater and then 8 years later elect George McGovern. Also I'd be interested in seeing how Theodore Roosevelt is remembered a fluke that was elected in an abnormal campaign, a brilliant campaigner that was able to bring a third party to victory, or a failure for that party's inability to win any subsequent elections, at least on the presidential level.

Hi all,

Year Party Candidate

1796 I George Washington
1800 DR Thomas Jefferson

??? Washington was not a candidate in 1796. Jefferson was the loser then. John Adams was the loser in 1800.

1860 SD John Breckinridge

Why Breckinridge? He was second in electoral votes, but third in popular votes.

1896 D William J. Bryan
1900 D William J. Bryan
1904 D Alton B. Parker
1908 D William J. Bryan

How does Bryan win a third term after being displaced by Alton Parker? I know. Bryan retired in 1904, but was named Secretary of State. Parker is shot by an anarchist. VP Henry Davis (age 81) succeeds as President, but dies from the strain of office. Bryan as Sec of State succeeds to the Presidency, and wins another full term.
