From what I've read of the Brest-Litovsk Treaty and the shipping of Lenin into Russia, the German high command was actually looking forward to the Bolsheviks running Russia after the war. Once victorious in the west, the Reich would then turn to the east and "strangle the Bolshevik government in its crib" by sending the German army on a campaign to "liberate" Russia from the Communists. And they'd be portraying themselves as the heroes in that action as they were saving the Russians from the murderous Reds and were also saving the entire aristocratic system from them as well. Thus they would be supported by the rest of Europe for their actions. For the German militarists it would've been a "win / win."
