It‘s not as specialised as you think it is. Sure, she was designed to support LCSs, but she is blue-water capable, and with that many helicopters would be a very formidable ASW escort ship. Still, the points about LCS being modular (again, if the OTL version gets built) are valid. So I’ll drop the Johnston F-IV. Next thing I’ll work on will be the CGBL (finally!).
Can I offer a piece of advice --- before you design ships, design a naval grand strategy and then figure out what operational strategies are needed to fulfill that grand strategy and then what specific missions and capabilities are required and then figure out what the opposition can do.... at that point design ships.

With hindsight, is there really any reason to build the Flight I Johnston without a hanger for helicopters? It always struck me as penny wise, pound foolish that the Flight I Burke's were hanger-less while DDG-47 had space for two SH-2/60s.
Might want to include the Mk 71 from the get-go as well, since you're refitting the Spruance's with them.

The Mk. 71 doesn't fit, it'll obstruct the view from the bridge.

True, as was noted in the Gibbs and Cox report! Here's a photo from their study: it keeps the 29/32 cell forward but with a reduced ammunition amount.
The bridge is still 1.8 decks above the gun even with the Mk. 71 mount. It doesn't block anything that the bow of the ship doesn't normally block. Besides, even if the gun was 3 times taller and did obstruct the view, it wouldn't matter. The only thing you'd need human line-of-sight for is harbor navigation, and that can be done from the bridge wings, which stick out to the side. In fact, I'm pretty sure you could fit 2 Mk 71s there, one superfiring over the other (at the expense of the VLS). Not that you'd want to, though, if you really needed an NFS ship like that for whatever reason you'd put the second gun on the stern. Still, you get my point.

That's good advice, I'll use it from now on.

I'm actually not sure. It does seem rather weird, considering that means for the first 2 years of their service they had no ASW beyond the Mk. 32 SVTTs (VL-ASROC wasn't a thing until 1993). There's nothing wrong with the tubes per see, but it would have been nice to have a ranged ASW system, especially considering they were supposed to replace the other ASW equipped destroyers.

Heres the latest topdown:

CGBL tomorrow (hopefully)

So, it's taking a bit longer than I thought, but here is where I am so far:

Top to bottom

Johnston Flight I - This may look similar to an Arleigh Burke Flight I at a distance, but there are slight changes, mostly to the superstructure in an effort to make her easier to draw.

Johnston Flight II - The hulls been extended, the rear cutout has been filled in, and a hangar has been added for 2 helicopters.

Johnston Flight III - The bow has been redesigned to hold a 64-cell VLS module, and the hangar has been expanded to span the width of the ship and the length of the smokestack on one side, allowing for the storage of 3 helicopters.

CG21 (guided missile cruiser 21st century) - This is basically a new ship. The hull is wider, longer, and deeper, the superstructure is taller with a new 3-panel set of radars installed atop it, the hangars been lengthened to store 4 helicopters, a Mk. 71 gun has been installed forwards, the number of VLS cells has increased substantially, and the number of harpoons and CIWS has doubled. This design is heavily inspired by this: https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/winchesters-warships.705778/page-4#post-63443906 I recommend you read through the entire thread, there are some really cool designs in it.

I read that thread on SB; it does indeed have some cool designs.

You're definitely going to need to tweak the CG21 design, though; I don't think the US Navy would reuse that much Burke architecture and they're definitely not sticking with AN/SPY-1. And there still needs to be that Zumwalt equivalent...

Here's something wild you might want to consider: Sideshooter It combines the 5 inch gun and RAM launcher, sort of like the Russian Kashtan. Pretty neat and could help expedite getting RAM into the fleet.

Alright, so it's been a while but I'm (probably) done with the Johnstons and CG21 for now. And I did some other stuff too.

I couldn't get the formatting to work for the specifications, so I attached them as a PDF.

Here's something wild you might want to consider: Sideshooter It combines the 5 inch gun and RAM launcher, sort of like the Russian Kashtan. Pretty neat and could help expedite getting RAM into the fleet.

That's really cool! I'll look into it a bit more.

Btw, here’s the diagrams:

The Atlanta one is only half-finished, I still have to model the superstructure in detail and the AGS.

EDIT: I cleaned up some grammatical errors, here's the specs again:

Ok, just finished binging this and a couple of suggestions/rants. For background, I have 10 years navy in the lat 70's early 80's on subs and then 20 years in a naval shipyard as a system engineer.

One case of apples and oranges. The VLS mk 41/8 cell module, 16 tons dry and is designed for a canister that weighs 1 to 3 tons each.
The Mk 57 VLS/4 cell module is 16.75 tons dry with a canister that weights up to 4.5 tons each.
The key is the number of cells. The Mk 57 weighs the same as the Mk 41, but only HALF the cell count.

On the Death of Nuclear Cruisers. The "Word" in our Office in the Yard from Congress (Sam N.). During the First Gulf war several Congressman and Arabian Leaders became worried of the sinking of possible nuclear ships in the Persian Gulf. This so-called fear spread after the GF 1 and questions were being bantered around above the Yard Commanders level of even keeping the CGN's. This culminated in 1993-4 during the C/RFOH of The Virginia CGN's and they were killed during the over-haul before the Fuel cells or any new electronics could be installed, and became the first two of the CGN's to be decommed.

You can blame Reagan and cheap Oil for the demise of CGN and CSGN construction.
In the 70's we have a oil price war by OPEC, The Saudi's did not like us and Europe that much yet, The Iranian's hated us after throwing out the Shaw. So oil was expensive and Nuclear Power was looking very good. The USN had both Diesel and Nuclear subs, One nuclear Cruiser and the rest Nuclear Destroyers, Four CVN by 1980.
Then Reagan ended the Iranian Hostage Crisis and started selling guns to the Middle East, (ie anyone who opposed Iran and Russia. Then Cheap oil lead by the Saudi's and Iraq (to pay for our guns). The NIMBY's protested and sued the Civilian Nuclear Power plants into bankruptcy and HG Rickover was forced to retire which put the final nail in new CGN construction.
With Rickovers retirement, the Nuclear Navy lost it's enabler for nuclear cruisers. Rickover was blackmailing Congress to keep his Nuk engineering sailors well-paid and bonuses starting as soon as the Conscripted navy started getting out. (To start getting the first SRB's for Submarine engineering personnel, he blackmailed Congress to get it. He at first asked for the money for his people. He was turned down by Congress and was told to do what he could with what he had. He in his more civilized way said ok. He then parked the first Nuclear Carrier to get the manning he needed to keep the Ballistic missile subs at sea. So you can guess what happened when Congress saw the sticker shock of the CGN's and the follow-on CSGN construction, and the Project lead Admiral (who most likely took credit for the suggestion of either Civilian Engineers or Junior Navy Engineers) that the new AiGIS system could be fit onto a Spruance hull instead of Rickover's very pricy CSGN which Congress had agreed and was stupid to have been tricked by Rickover to put in writing that they would build then at 4 CSGN per each CVN and that all Large Surface Combatants would hence forth be nuclear powered, Why at the times CGN's in the 70's were designated Frigates and Destroyers, not Cruisers and Long Beach was the last Large Surface Combatant that was not a Carrier.
