US invasion of Syria?

there have been many threads about an invasion of Iraq done right, or not done at all. what if Syria had been the target of President Bush? consider: last threat to Israel, takes care of Lebanon, deals with Palestianin Crisis, and covers their Jordanian Ally. is it possible? what are the reprucssions and effects through the region?

dont see it. unless a base of operations is created via invasion of Lebanon....which would make a bigger PR disaster.

According to Seymour Hersh, Syria actually reached out to the US to help track down various Islamic fundamentalist groups, since they were a common enemy of both the West and secular Arab governments.

However, if there were some alternate Syrian government that was suspected of providing its large stockpile of chemical weapons to terrorist organizations, it could potentially happen. If you still have an invasion of Iraq and Syria was more actively involved in destabilizing the US position in Iraq, you might see an invasion of then - there was definitely a fear among more left-wing or cynical people following the war that Bush might decide to attack Syria to prevent it from safeguarding Iraqi insurgents.

I doubt any of them would allow their nation to be a staging area for such an invasion. In OTL I believe Turkey disallowed their airspace from being used in the Iraq invasion, so I doubt that they'd offer their land.

You dont think Israel would let America use its land to attack a country it is still officially at war with?

The Israelis are many things, stupid is not one of them.

A US invasion of Syria is possible circa 2004, when the US still had reserves (right now the US strategic reserve consists of a single 2 battalion brigade) it could commit, and then a Syrian incursion would be used to end Syrian help to the Iraq insurgency (at the time Syria was more important than Iran in that respect). And I think it would be limited to the border/Euphrates region, to clear out camps, and training grounds, no drive to Damascus.

No, I don't. There are many reasons for this, not in the least the fact that the Orthodox Jews would be up in arms about it and that it would cast a pale light on the IDF. I think a much, much more likely scenario would be the US pressuring Israel to invade Syria.
