US colony of Irak

Hi all,

I was thinking: th invasion of Irak was basically a repeat of gunboat diplomacy and colonial expedition of old. A pretext, invasion of the country, fall of the regime replaced by a friendlier one and take over of resources.

Now the US didn't go the whole way. So what if the US had called Irak an official protectorate? Basically prolonging the war administration? It's not like they really took into account international opinion at the time.

Would that be completely crazy?

In this century, yes yes it would. To make a sovereign natiokn into a protectorate would be ridiculous. And considering the world already thought badly enough of the invasion with no WMDs this would cause any remaining support and favorability of the invasion to plummet.
