US bicycle troops see action

I forget whether it's still the case, but I recall newspaper reports from years gone by stating it was a popular chant by Dutch supporters at Germany vs. Holland football matches: "Give us back our bikes!"

If we are to be in that area -

"you know why German tourists always carry bicycles on their cars?"
"Cause it was such a long walk home in '45!"

I've found in my very international circles that when Dutch and Germans meet that it is a joke that frequently arises.

The author is Thomas Stevens. the German translation is called "20.000 Meilen mit dem Hochrad um die Welt". I can't seem to find the English title ATM, unfortunately, and you wouldn't believe the number of Thomas Stevenses out there.

Thanks - found him on Gutenberg.

The Swiss only disbanded their bicycle units a few years ago. They were once considered an elite force, able to respond to enemy breakthroughs much faster than others. It's members were in much better state of physical conditioning than regular infantry. They did this with one speed bikes used by their grandfathers.
