OTL the British wanted to put the US-Canadian boundary on the Columbia River, whereas the Americans wanted the 49th parallel.

Here's a thought however: Could the US and Britain have just horsetraded for the territory? The US accepts the British getting their preferred boundary in exchange for... something?

Around this time there was a bit of a diplomatic head-butting in Central America. The US cut a deal with Honduras fora Canal but the British weren't too fond of this. Maybe respecting American hegemony in the Northern Triangle of Central America and ceding Belize and the Bay Islands could be a fair trade.

Alternatively, the Bahamas were a rather small colony without too much significance to the British (IIRC) and a source of Anglo-American tensions due to US slaves fleeing there.
