Updating classic SF books

So, how would you go about updating the classics without ruining their impact?

Eg I've just started rereading the Lensmen series and while a few tech tweaks are needed (specifically as regards computing) the main changes needed are on the social progressive side removing the women-are-mostly-mothers and absence of sexual orientation

Why do they need editing? They're a product of their time and they'll age accordingly.

The Forever War has a lot of eye rolling moments but that doesn't change how groundbreaking it was in its day.

I'm not saying they necessarily need it, merely asking what changes you would make.

With respect to FW the author did say that the different novel Forever Peace was his updated response

It doesn't matter except in the unlikely event they do a movie series. I would love it but don't see it happening in my lifetime.(I'm 51)

Regarding the Lensman books, the only thing I'd certainly eliminate is the early prehistory and Atlantis stuff (which alway detracted). I'd keep the tech and societal anachronisms. That's part of the charm of the books.

Aren't they are part of the rise and fall motif? I'd certainly update them to at least current pophistory.
