Universal Healthcare for the United States

Two things actually would make it more affordable than what we have right now.

A. Doctors wouldn't have an incentive to do excessive, and sometimes pointless treatments to make more money, as if implemented right, it will be salary pay for doctors, reducing the over all cost significantly.

B. A higher focus on preventive healthcare would drastically reduce the cost of the system.

Would it be perfect? No, but it would be a substantial improvement over what we right now in the area of cost considering what insurance companies will do to gain profit, and a system that incentives doctors to do excessive treatments that waste money without improving prospects for patients.

Yes on A. no on B.

Heard of some high end plans that tried this. DIdn't work. You end up spending a lot on tests the return negative results.

And people still wonder why Teddy Roosevelt is a freaking superhero on this site.

I was reading some of TR's Progressive Party policies on wikipedia

In the social sphere the platform called for

The political reforms proposed included

The platform also urged states to adopt measures for "direct democracy", including:

However, the main theme of the platform was an attack on the domination of politics by business interests, which allegedly controlled both established parties. The platform asserted that
To destroy this invisible Government, to dissolve the unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task of the statesmanship of the day.[10] To that end, the platform called for

Could it be possible for say Roosevelt to get something like health care?

In fact Ted Kennedy and other Senate Democrats turned Nixon's offer of universal health insurance down, believing that they would win in 1976 and institut universal Medicare (or whatever the exact US Democratic healthcare position was).

Therefore either Kennedy and co. accept Nixon's offer, or a solidly liberal and experienced Democrat is elected in 1976.

Ted Kennedy, Ted Roosevelt... Two Teds.

Notably, Ted Kennedy is blamed by Jimmy Carter for the failure of Carter's health care reform plan.

If there's anyone Carter fumes over in his diary, it's Ted Kennedy, his nemesis. Here's what he wrote when they clashed on health care: "Kennedy continuing his irresponsible and abusive attitude, immediately condemned our health plan. He couldn't get five votes for his plan," Stahl read from the book. "He drove you up the wall."

"I don't know if I ever got up the wall," Carter replied.

But his comments on Kennedy are harsh, even now after his death.

"The fact is that we would have had comprehensive health care NOW, had it not been for Ted Kennedy's deliberately blocking the legislation that I proposed in 1978 or '79," Carter said.

Asked if he blames Kennedy for the failure, Carter said, "Exactly."

"Health care. His issue," Stahl remarked.

"Exactly. It was his fault," Carter said. "Ted Kennedy killed the bill."
