United States of South America

It is possible for some federation similar to the USA to rise in South America? How will this affect South America and the world? Will they get along well with the USA?

That’s basically what Bolivar wanted, wasn’t it? I think he even mentioned courting the US once or twice.

I’m not sure how to get it to work shy of an undistracted Spain threatening the continent and forcing their unity. But then again, a distracted Spain was the way they got independence in the first place.

Indeed, Great Colombia is the closest thing we had to a USSA (EUAS - Estados Unidos de la América del Sud?), but was short lived.

Perhaps the Peru-Bolivia Confederation, with the right PoD, might be a second option. IOTL it was basically ruined by the wars with Chile and Argentina, but it had somewhat of a potential.

Assuming that you meant a federation consisting of all the South American states, thats hard, specially if you want to put Brazil in the mix. Some regional amalgams are more doable, like Peru-Bolivia, Great Colombia and possibily a "greater" Argentina which joins with Chile (this one I believe to be ASB, as Argentina was beset by a lot of internal strife, while Chile simply hadn't the manpower or will to get too adventurous, excepting the conquest of north Chile itself, and the colonization of Patagonia). Then, again, the fact they actually broke apart so quickly IOTL serves as testament of how difficult it might be a continental union.

Anyways, I don't think it changes too much. Relations with the USA remain friendly, even if only after the Mexican-American War. It's also probable that will remain nothing more than a regional power through the 19th/20th centuries, so it won't impact so much in world geopolitics like the USA did.

It almost certainly won't cover the entire continent. Unless there is some sort of South American equivalent of the EU or a European empire conquers them and they are left together after said empire gets kicked out. Was the USA ever interested in putting something like this together, perhaps for the purpose of better commerce stemming from less trade bounties and (edit: greater) regional stability?

Something very similar was asked in another thread.
I suggested a mini-TL in order to accomplish just that.
Read it here.

I would like to help, how?

First of all, check your Private Messages Inbox.
Second, why don't you give it a try yourself?
Third, I already asked a question? Where exactly should be the core of ALU?
In the meantime, because I got NO help, I did some research myself and arrived to a conclusion: The Southern Cone seems by far the best option.

I have very little time for additional research but I think I will give it a try anyway.
If people who actually live in Latin America won't help it will most probably end as just another B-rated TL. As if there weren't already so many of them!
See you soon. (I will start a new thread obviously and post the link here).

Portugal occupied half of South America and managed to make just one country out of it. There's a federation- smaller than America, but larger than Australia.

The Spanish half fragmented into many smaller and small countries.
Are u talking just about Spanish South America.

A South America comprising 2 Brazils? Not much difference to America or the world.
