United States of Indonesia survives

OTL this country lasted a year, before it was replaced by the Republic of Indonesia.

What kind of POD is needed to save it? And how would it develop relative to OTL's Indonesia? Would a federal structure be able to prevent separatist conflicts?

The POD can’t be after 27th December 1949. The thing with the United States of Indonesia that doomed its existence is that it carried the stigma of being the Dutch’s last effort at divide and conquer.

A POD that may save it would be Indonesia’s founding fathers agreeing that the “format” of the nation would be as a federation rather than a unitary state in the months leading to August 1945. In OTL, Soekarno (who became the first president) was in favor of a unitary state while Hatta (who became the first VP) was in favor of a federation.

I think a Federal Indonesia would lead to more equitable development rather than the “Java develops first” approach of the OTL Unitary State.

What if Soekarno does get on the plane evacuating him from (IIRC) Sabang. Would that put Hatta in the driver seat or does that necessitate the plane crashing as well?
