United States Declares War on Germany and Mexico at the Exact Same Time

OTL, Congress declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917.

OTL, Mexico didn't formally reject the Zimmerman Telegram until April 14, 1917.

What if Congress goes to war with Mexico on April 6 believing that they are working with the Germans because of no rejection of the telegram?

You do realize that Carranza realized how crazy war with the US was, right? I'll let Wikipedia explain.
Mexican response

Mexican President Venustiano Carranza assigned a general to assess the feasibility of a Mexican takeover of their former territories.[3]. The general concluded that it would not be possible or even desirable for the following reasons:

  • Attempting to re-take the former territories would mean certain war with the United States.

  • No matter how "generous" it was, Germany's "financial support" would be worthless. Mexico could not use it to acquire arms, ammunition, or other war supplies, because the United States was the only sizable arms manufacturer in the Americas. The Royal Navy controlled the Atlantic sea lanes, so Germany could not possibly supply any quantity of arms.

  • Even if Mexico had the military means to re-take the territory it would have had severe difficulty accommodating and/or pacifying the large English-speaking population.

  • Mexico had even cooperated with the ABC nations to prevent a war with the United States, generally improving relations. If Mexico were to enter war against the U.S. it would strain relations with ABC nations—who would later declare war on Germany.
Carranza formally declined Zimmermann's proposals on April 14, by which time the U.S. had declared war on Germany.

I know that. I'm talking about what happens if the United States declares war on Mexico NOT KNOWING they had rejected it.

Similar to the War of 1812 when the U.S. declared war on Britain for impressment not knowing they already ended impressment.

Baja quite possibly, maybe a few more bits and bobs along the OTL border, but can't see much more.

Even Baja would take some real blunders on Mexico's part as:

1. Carranza will surrender and request a truce/white peace as soon as possible. As noted, he wasn't LBI, and could do the math as well as anyone else. Doubt he wanted to go down in history as el ultimo Presidente del Mexico.

2. The Entente will be asking the US to stop smacking the locals and get on to filling the holes in their lines

As implausble and undiplomatic as it is i would love to see the US go "Shut up, you guys NEED us, so let us get on with the war. Home front first and all that." :D
