I'm trying to create a scenario in which most of Latin America stays together after independence from Spain. I figured out the PoD would have to be a bit back, maybe mid-17th Century.

  • Do you think if Spain had a better monarch than Charles IV at the time, maybe one familiar with enlightenment authors and ideas, maybe the Bourbon reforms could have gone differently, establishing a a commonwealth relationship between Spain and the West Indies?
  • Or if the end goal is having an independent but united Latin America, maybe it is better for the Spanish monarchs remain incompetent, and just have a much better leadership in the independence movements (I'm looking at the extremely popular, well-connected, and able Bernardo de Galvez for this).
  • Or perhaps a combination of the two above?
What do you think so far?
