United Europe

Was there ever really any chance of a sort of Eu/empire form after the end of the napoleonic wars, say at the congress of Vienna, that the various power decide after seeing all the devastation causes in a modern european war that there would never ever be a war between them.

I got this idea after read one of the tl on this forum a few months ago, but was there ever really any chance of it and could it lead to a analogue of a modern EU?

Would this sort of history prevent the fall of empires in the mid 20th century? Would most of the world be conquered by various European powers not have to worry about the other european power backstabbing them?

I think you might just then have created the most powerful alliance ever witnessed by man.

The again, it might just disintegrate soon after as the European power realize again that they can't stand each other.

Pretty much impossible at this point. Remember the problems relating to Prussian and Austrian dominance in the German Confederation? Now multiply that by 4 if you get France and Spain in it, with Russia trying to get some of the Ottoman Empire as OTL and Britain staying out but still interested in preserving the Balance of Power.

Heck, Britain alone would scupper this, last thing they want is a single, nominally unified power controlling the continent.

There's just too many great powers involved, sorty of like if you asked the US, UK, France, Russia and China to form a world government after WWII.

I am kinda thinking that the devastation of a 'modern war' between one modern country and another would at least scare the politicians into compying for a few decades at least and by 1850 the 'alliance' has been going on for so long that noone wants to leave it. after such time I reckon it would evolve into something more, like the current day Eu formed out of the old EEC.

Another point of making this thread was that i wanted a sort of counter wait to US economical domination in the 20th century. If we had a United Europe then the resources of all the nations could easily outmatch the US.

The 30 years' war killed off a third of Germany's population; the Wars of Religion in France supposedly killed a few millions as well although not as much as in Germany; the 7yw had a death toll of about a million and the military doctrines of the time came as a reaction against the mass casualties of the Spanish succession wars, 30yw and etc. The Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars were also pretty bloody, especially since the whole lot lasted 25 years. The closest to unity that happened was the easily broken down congress system.
