Reading "The Civil War of 1812" by Alan Taylor I have discovered a interesting scenario that almost took place. In 1796 the French Canadians were hardly loyal to Britain and several Vermonters were hardly the same to the United States. British officials at this times FEARED a revolt by the French Habitants, but on one hand it seems they would not have revolted without direct invasion by France.
Apparently though there was a planned invasion of Canada. Ira Allen and other supporters has a grand scheme of importing g arms from the French under an American merchant ship. After getting the weapons to Vermont and then into Canada to support a French Canadian revolt and French invasion where then Vermont would secede and join Canada as 'United Columbia'.
The plan though never got into the ready stage as the American merchant ship carrying the two dozen cannons and 20,000 muskets was captured off the south coast of Ireland. The British believing the arms having been destined for the United Irishmen.
To think what would happen if this plan had gone farther.
