United British Republic-A co-operative thread

Just a notion:

Instead of a United Kingdom how about a United British Republic of England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Isle Of Man and the Channel Islands.

Each Nation has control of 90% of it's own affairs except foreign and trade affairs which are conducted through the federal parliament in London.

Each nation also has is own assembly for their own affairs:

England: York
Scotland: Edinburgh
Wales: Cardiff
Ireland: Dublin

IOM: Douglas
Jersey and Guernsey have their own states.

The federal government has a president as head of state who selects a first minister and cabinet.

Each "regional" assembly have their own elections.

Sounds like a good idea, but it would be very hard for it to come about. Expect the Federal Government to gradually whittle down the power that each state has.

Why York and not London?

When do you envision the POD? I think it would have to be pretty early for the English capital to be anything but London.

Do you see London being the capital of the whole united republic and York as the location of the English assembly- located in a different city to prevent it seeming like the English are more powerful than the other parts of the republic? A reasonable idea, but i'd still expect the english assembly to be in London or at least in the southeast.

It's not goign to happen: England will always dominate demographically and economically. That's why it's not happening now: England has 50 million people in it out of a total population of 60 million; that's only going to be more pronounced the further back you go.

The only way you're going to get this is to balkanise England. Perhaps if the Viking invasions were different and the various kingdoms survived in England then they could eventually unite a la Germany. So you'd have a federal Republic of Mercia, Kent, Wessex, Northumberland, etc. How you'd work the Gaelic fringe into that I've no idea; maybe conquest/cultural assimilation.

The POD would be post viking invasion. I'm imagining the threat from the Normans and the Romans would lead to loose alliances and then slowly merging.

I suppose London is a reasonable base for the english assembly but one possible idea would be to have london as a prototype B.C.T. (British Capital Territory) a'la Canberra.

Many thanks for the comments so far

If the POD is early enough there is much more scope for other cities than London to be a capital of England.

London was strategically important, and well placed from trade with the continent, but York , Winchester and Nottingham were all important administrative, trade and population centre during and just after the viking invasions.
London only really became the only choice for the capital after the Norman conquest, when it was the centre of power from which the country was subjugated.

London was the logical choice, but it was not the only one.

Oh i agree with you on the Winchester and Nottingham being possible alternative capitals. I chose london because of the trade routes.

Elections would be every five years and would take the following form:

Each voter would vote for A president via majority vote then assembly and senate members by PR

The president would then select a First Minister and Executive.
