There was a move to have the portions of Bengal, both Hindu and Muslim, to form a united country rather than be partitioned on communal lines. There seems to have been a good level of support for the effort and it was initially supported by the British, Ghandi and Jinnah. What seemed to ruin it was politicking with the Congress and Muslim League.
Let's say Bengal gets the full partition. What would be the butterfly's for them?
Calcutta would be in Bengal so they would have the chance to build up from the British infanstructure and trade legacy. Without being apart of Pakistan they may be able avoid going to war with India. Communal riots in OTL seem to have sprung up due to push/pull by the Muslim league and Congress, most likely there would still be religious tensions.
