Unitary State of America

Is there any plausible way for a sovereign state encompassing most of the modern area of the United States of America to be unitary rather than a federation? POD preferably in the eighteenth or nineteenth century.

The simplest way to do this might be to force an alternative or second Constitutional Convention in the wake of a crisis. You could either have a much worse Critical Period under the Articles of Confederation, leading to a unitary Constitution right off the bat, or have something like a worse Nullification Crisis lead to an early Civil War, and a second Constitutional Convention follow after that. A messier Civil War and more hardcore Reconstruction might also be able to do it as well, but all of these hinge upon the voting public and political establishment being willing to shift a substantial amount of power to a central authority, something I don't think they'd be very willing to do without a major crisis to shake off the post-Revolution mindset.

I was thinking it would be very unlikely for the states to give up most of their power unless they were in a crisis even worse than the civil war, such as being occupied by a foreign power. As far as I know even during the various wars against the british, the civil war, and the world wars de-federalization was never politically possible.

With a POD in the 18th century, early enough, perhaps a new Dominion of New England surfaces? It could encompass Pennsylvania and Delaware and probably Marland as well, and eventually move into the Ohio Valley and beyond.

I'm not sure how that would be done, though. It would have to have looser restrictions on trade than the previous since IIRC the economy was the main problem witht he frist, as it was hurting their merchants and making the British ones richer.

Perhaps if this were coupled with a French victory in the French and Indian Wars, the Dominion of New England could then merge with the large Louisiana when *it* rebels, if it does. Not right away but eventually.

The French win the French and Indian War, taking Canada and everything west of the Appalachian mountains.

To protect the colonies, the Monarchy disbands all royal charters and colonies, and orders direct administration from London. The King appoints a Governor-General for the united colony of America.

This is met with outrage, but enough people accept this is for safety. Of course after some time revolution breaks out and the colonists win. By this point the former colonies are forgotten and a unified government is made.
