Union of Kalmar: Round Two

Hey im planning on writing a TL about if Fredrick III of Denmark married Kristina of Sweden and the two power were united... any suggestions on how this could come about???

I am not certain Fredrik would agree, if so you would have to remove the war 1643-45 against Sverige and since the regencycouncil was quite adamant about that and Christina not yet of age, I suppose you have to let Gustaf live and possibly seek some kind of agreement with Danmark that was beneficiary for him then maybe some kind of bethrotal between the two houses, another problem were that most royal houses regarded Gustaf as a ursurper which has stolen the throne from his uncle Sigismund and I do not doubt that the Oldenburgs shared that sentiment.

hmmm i stillthink Christian 4th and his son Fredrick would see the benifits of such a union even if they viewed Guastaus as an ursuper... maybe an agreement between Christian and Gustaus stating that they wont attack each other while they work to help the protestant cause in Germany.. which would eventually turn into a bethroal of Kristina to Christian's second son Fredrick, who replaces his brother as heir to Denmark on his death.... would this work or is it to far fetched

At the time, Denmark and Sweden was at each other's throats over dominion of the Baltic (with Sweden slowly getting the upper hand), I don't think a union would be possible at the time. The Swedish nobility would probably demand that Kristina abdicate if she was to marry a Dane, or at least that their children were not in line of succession, which kind of defeats the whole thing.

Besides, Kristina was raised as a boy would have been and quite strong-willed. She showed no real interest in men (there's still some debate on wether she was a lesbian, bisexual or perhaps had an hormonal disbalance), at least not the man she was supposed to marry, her cousin (that would later become Karl X Gustav). Some of her letters to Ebba Sparre hold a distinct erotic tone.

Regardless, Kristina was very strong-willed and decided early not to marry. Her mother was mostly hysteric and her father dead, so there was no-one to force her to do anything really. You need to have Gustav II Adolf survive and force that marriage for it to happen, methinks. But if he lives, why would he marry his daughter of to the Danes? He did not really like them. If he had lived, he could perhaps have had a son too, and then it is possible, but then Kristina is not the heir to the Swedish throne anymore, and the idea of a union falls again.

I agree with von Adler. The Swedish-Danish relations were extremely tense in the 17th century and Kristina was extremely reluctant to marry. The only way I can see any kind of an alliance forming between Sweden and Denmark is putting them up against a strong, mutual enemy. And since there really wasn't one in the Baltics, in the 17th century, you'd need to set a POD earlier, perhaps making Poland considerablystronger it was in the OTL.

Even in that case it's arguable Fredrik III and Kristina would have been able to start a dynasty. There are contemporary accounts which lead me to think Kristina may have suffered of endometriosis, which, in those times, must have been a major cause of female infertility.
