UN S-G Gareth Gareth Evans

Back in the 1990s, Australia's then Foreign Minister Gareth Evans was strongly lobbying for Australia to play a greater role in international affairs via the UN, to the extent that ppl joked that so strong were his aspirations to be the next Secretary-General, he was nicknamed Gareth Gareth Evans a la then-UN S-G Boutros Boutros-Ghali. Now, qhat were the prospects for Gareth Evans succeeding Boutros-Ghali as UN S-G instead of Kofi Annan, and what sort of S-G would he have made ?

For a horrifying moment I though this was Gareth G-g-g-gates.

Luckily, no-one seems to know who he is anymore.

Any greater role for Australia in Foreign Affairs can only be a good thing on the great stage, but Australia would have to become more open to immigration at the same time. This may not play so well back home, because there was a growing rightist movement at the time.

Could you outline Gareth Evans' character and political leanings for the uninitiated, please?
