Were NATO and the Warsaw Pact going to go to war what do we think the role of the United Nations would be?
The UN Charter specifically says that before turning issues over to the Security Council the nations must try to resolve them themselves, and pre-Cuban Missile Crisis when there wasn't a hotline between POTUS and the Premier, these negotiations often fell through and were brought up at the UN. Given the history of the Soviet Union in that body, it seems unlikely that they would be the ones bringing up the issue and that if it did surface they'd likely veto it.
However, during the Suez Crisis a General Assembly resolution was passed that allowed for an emergency GA meeting to overrule Security Council vetoes and call for the use of military force (which is exactly what happened, against the wishes of Britain and France).
So do we think that either side in the Cold War would attempt to lend legitimacy to the coming conflict or would things happen to quickly for anyone to bother?
