UK constitutional crisis of 1916

June 1916 the 1916 flu pandemic swipes though the royal family and by early July the only living descendant of Edward VII is George V. on July 29 1916 George V dies . Under the Act of Settlement of 1701 the line of Princess Victoria, Princess Royal (Victoria Adelaide Mary Louisa) is next to the crown of England. The next in line there for to the crown of the England is now Frederick William Victor Albert of Prussia (Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany).what will happen now. Would Alexandra Feodorovna Romanova and her husband Nicholas II of Russia be alternative claimants to the crown that might get support from parliament over that of Wilhelm II.

No; succession traces male lines before female ones. On that basis, the line of the Princes Royal is only fourth from Victoria if you kill off George V's family. Which means, if I've got it right, that the Queen-Consort of Romania would be next in line. I think.

Well, if Edward VII and his entire line is gone, wouldn't the throne then pass to his eldest surviving brother and the uncle of George V, Prince Arthur?

No. The next male line after Edward VII's is that of his eldest brother, Prince Alfred. He's dead by this point of course, but it's still his line that gets the gig.

Just checked, and yes, this lady would become Queen. This means that OTL's Carol II is heir to both Romania and Britain. Isn't that fun?

Her husband, Ferdinand of Romania, was a Catholic, which would make her ineligible under the succession rules. It wouldn't make her son, Carol, ineligible though, and he was orthodox, so it could very well be that, absent some constitutional intervention, he could ascend to the throne immediately.

He would, actually. There is no chance for constitutonal intervention; succession is immediate. A change in the succession requires an Act of Parliament. Although if George V's family was dropping like flies, that could happen beforehand anyway.

So yeah. We get Charles III, or whatever he calls himself. Wiki doesn't tell us his full name.

Didn't know about Ferdinand being a Catholic at all. That's quite interesting.

Said the beauteous Magda Lupescu
As she rode to Britain's rescue
'Tis a wonderful thing
To be under a king
Is democracy better, I esk you?
