On November 22, 2002, at UFC 40, Ken Shamrock returned to the UFC for the first time since December 1996 to fight Ortiz in a title match for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship in one of the biggest, most anticipated and most important fights in UFC history.

This match saved UFC's ass from bankruptcy. Ken Shamrock went into this match with a torn ACL. What if he decided to back out of the match because of that ACL? Or what if Tito had also gotten injured and had been forced to back out? The UFC would have probably collapsed, and with it the biggest MMA challenger to Pro Wrestling and Boxing today. Could another company have risen up to replace UFC and what it did for MMA? Or would MMA have stayed down in North America?
