The United States aquired Cuba in The Spanish American War in 1898, and several years later gave Cuba her independence. But what if instead The United States had made Cuba a state?

In 1954 a young politically active Fidel Castro is elected as a U.S. Congressman from Cuba. He is re-elected to Congress in 1956. In 1958 Castro is elected to The U.S. Senate as the junior senator from Cuba.

Is Senator Castro a Democrat or a Republican? What kind of senator does he make? Does he serve only in The U.S. Senate, or does he go on to serve in other offices, perhaps a cabinet post, perhaps a run for The Presidency? What kind of U.S. President does Castro make?

Something you have to remember. Cuba that is a state in The USA is going to be a very different Cuba in many ways than the Cuba of OTL. Democratic, Capitalist, strong tourism and sugar cane industry. None of the kind of corruption that marked the pre-Castro Cuba of OTL.

All of that is going to mean in many ways a very different Fidel Castro than in OTL.

Any ideas on this one?
