U.S. Gov.'s change of heart on Native Americans

This is my first thread!

I'm not sure if this has been posted before (if so, let me know where).

I'm sure most of you know of the repressment of Native Americans in America. Its got a sorted history, but I'd like to know everyone's thoughts on the idea of what if the U.S. government somehow had a change of heart towards the tribes and somehow was able to reach some sort of deal allowing the tribes to continue to live on the land of their choice without allocation to reservations. Not only that but the government would stop the practice of "civilizing" the tribes. Could this be plausible, and how might it go about happening? The time period I am thinking of when this could happen is right after the civil war though it could start earlier.

I realize that this is a big idea. We've got among other things both cultural and religious issues to contend with. Plus the European traditional view of indigenous people for one, and manifest Destiny as well.

"sordid".

Even if it isn't official US policy, there'd still be American-Indian conflicts. The removal of the Cherokee from Georgia and the following Trail of Tears all started because of rumours of gold on Cherokee lands, and so American settlers started encroaching upon Cherokee lands and then the Georgian government claimed the land of their own and all that mess with the Supreme Court happened-- it was the average citicenry and settlers who would usually start a fuss with Indians, not the government.

Thank you for the spelling correction. :)

I was thinking that too. Even if the government was "nicer" there would still be issues. Just look at what happened to the freed slaves. The government tried to uphold their rights but "Jim Crow" laws were established in the southern states.
