Tyler killed in USS Princeton Disaster of 1844

On Feb 28, 1844, many important US officials - including President Tyler - were aboard the USS Princeton, when the gun the Peacemaker exploded, killing the Secretary of State and the Secretary of the Treasury and several others. So, what if Tyler had been killed in the explosion, alongside those two cabinet members and the others? Theoretically, Willie Person Mangum would have succeeded to the Presidency - how would that have gone? What might his Presidency look like, as he finishes Tyler's term? And does Mangum get nominated by the Whigs for reelection over Clay in that year's election?

Well I reminded myself of Tyler by reading wiki and this bit should be interesting

Once he became president he stood against his party's platform and vetoed several of their proposals. As a result, most of his cabinet resigned, and the Whigs, dubbing him His Accidency, expelled him from the party. While he faced a stalemate on domestic policy, he still made several foreign policy achievements, signing the Webster–Ashburton Treaty with Britain and the Treaty of Wanghia with China. Tyler dedicated his last two years in office to his landmark accomplishment, the 1845 annexation of the Republic of Texas. With little hope that he would be elected in 1844, he created a third party to move public opinion in favor of annexation, which led to the 1844 presidential election of expansionist Democrat James K. Polk over Tyler opponents Henry Clay and Van Buren.

Willie Person Mangum....great middle name! Would he have carried on Tyler's policies, could he have manoevred with Polk, or would he have sat there being ineffective and seen what?

How much did Texas' eventual accession to the Union owe to Tyler's machinations? Without them, would Anson Jones have been able to carry the British-backed plan of full independence with Mexican recognition?

Best Regards
