two Popes forever

basically a question about what if the Western Schism never closed, how would the two Papacies change? what would these two Catholic Churches look like 100s of years latter? would there be a Reformation? or more splitting and more Popes?

This was just asked about yesterday.

would there be a Reformation?
Not as we know it.

or more splitting and more Popes?
I would anticipate this happening. Once the idea of multiple popes is established, monarch will set up their own popes as needed. I would expect within a century or two there would be, at a minimum, one in Rome, on in Avignon/Reims/Paris, one in Mainz/Trier/Cologne, and one in Canterbury/York/London. I have my doubts about the Pisan papacy surviving.

I could see a North-South split evolving just as an East-West one did. A northern pope in Canterbury or Ribe or Utrecht who is obeyed by the English and Scandinavians and proto-Protestants, while the Roman popes maintain their influence around the Med and in any countries that are against those who submit to the Northern See.

Actually, by the time the Pisan Papacy had come into existence, "Avignon" had lost France. And Avignon.

ALL HAIL THE PAPACY OF PENSACOLA! :D

As for the Pisans--don't count them out. They had contacts with the Empire, and one of the more politically adept popes. They might just nudge out the Urbanites and regain Rome.
