Scenario No. 1: In 1991, just after the Gulf War when H W Bush was at his height, there was speculation that he would drop Dan Quayle from the ticket and replace him with Dick Cheney, or another prominent figure, instead. See here.

(Particularly ironic in light of future developments is the quote, 'But Democrats could, not unfairly, ask whether the men on a Bush-Cheney team had a good ticker between the two of them.' Oh, what we could do for a bit of heart in the Oval Office...)

So let's say Bush does dump Quayle and appoint Cheney. Would Cheney be the nominee in 1996 or 2000? And if so, would he be electable, and what would a Cheney presidency be like? (Spare us the obvious joke.)

Scenario No. 2: In 2000, Lynne Cheney was considered as a conservative running mate for G. W. Bush. What if he'd chosen her? What would the influence of Lynne Cheney have been over the Bush administration, and perhaps more importantly the absence thereof (to the same extent) of Dick Cheney? And would she have been a contender for the presidency in 2008?
