Two Chinas

What would have to occur for the spheres of influence from the 19th century to evolve into two Chinas? I'm thinking somehow the Russians still aid Mao Tse Tung in part of the country, and the western powers unite their spheres into the Republic of China, modeled along western lines governmentally. How could this evolve?

Please do not mention Mao and 19th century China in the same thread, especially in the pre-1900 subforum.

If the spheres of influence remain, there will not be a Communist China. Probably a British state in Canton, with Russia annexing the north would be the most likely (read: not very).
