Two '68 Democratic Scenarios

One: There was some discussion of LBJ retaking the nomination in July and August due to Hubert's "softness". Plan was kiboshed after Hizzonor said LBJ had to publicly declare and Connally revealed ghastly Southern polling numbers. WI LBJ changed his mind? Perhaps he stems the reaction "now that Bobby's safely buried" by picking Ted as his VP?

Two: LBJ doesn't withdraw, and he beats RFK 60-40% in delegates (corresponding with OTL March projections). What happens next? I cannot see an incumbent President being directly defeated in a convention vote.

Bump. No takers? Remember what LBJ's criteria were for a Veep: "I want his pecker in my pocket" "I want someone to kiss my ass in Macy's window and say it smells like roses". A good deal of LBJ's antagonism to (fear, more accurately) to Bobby was that he couldn't be bent and was fiercely independent. Not bad qualities for a Veep. But not Johnson's Veep.
