Turn the Other Cheek - A Foreign Policy

Now what if, on the evening of September 10th, 2001 President Bush sees an image of Jesus Christ telling him to "turn the other cheek". Of course George was rather unsure what this meant when he went over to Florida to read to school children.

When he is told about the attacks, George "understands" that this dream was about, what he was "supposed to do". On his address to the nation in a joint session of Congress on September 20th, 2001 George Bush announces that he "officially [forgives] al-Qaeda and its leader - Osama bin-Laden - for the transgressions on September the eleventh".

This begins the "turn the other cheek" foreign policy.

What now?

==========

Of course this is pretty ASB, I'll admit that but I would like to see what would happen.

You mean what would happen after the massive rioting, the impeachment and the guys in white taking George W. to a padded room somewhere in Montana?:confused::p

Dick Cheney invades Afghanistan and Iraq, of course...then maybe Iran.

I would say that there would be rioting, yes, but there would not be an impeachment.

As per the 25th Amendment, Vice President Cheney and a majority of the cabinet declare the President mentally unfit to serve, and he is removed from office. Cheney therein becomes acting President and pursues and invasion of Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, [Insert oil-rich nation here]...

You feel that it would be possible to get a majority of the Cabinet to agree to that?

You mean, after he says Jesus talked to him, or after he ignores the greatest terrorist attack on american soil and over 3,000 dead:confused:

Now, Imagine it's December 8th and Roosevelt adressess the nation: "It's ok folks, I'm sure the japanese are sorry and feel really bad about yesterday, let's not be jerks about it...all forgiven and forgotten"

I suspect that everyone would be in awe of America's restraint, but most Americans would be pissed off and W would lose the 2004 election. No impeachment of course, because its always easy to justify that you cant attack a nation because of a single terror group.

The wisest course of action for a "restraint" scenario would have been not to go to war anywhere, but send black ops against AlQuaeda without tackling the Taliban at all. That policy might even have had a certain degree of popularity if it was successful.

America's world standing would be heightened amongst those who respect moderation (the good guys) and unfortunately, the bad guys would probably see this as a "weak" response and feel emboldened to a degree.

Now if we are really talking about Bush sending B-52s drop flowers and cards over AlQaeda's bases, then uh, yeah, ASB rings a bell.
