Turkic Cities, Russian Nomads?

How possible is it to achieve a situation where "Old Russia" is populated by an urban Turkic culture, while the closes thing to an Eastern Slavic civilization lives mainly a horse nomad lifestyle. Obviously, the Turkic civilization will never be shed of its nomadic origins, and its possible that the *Russians will be one small tribe among many, but the important thing is for their identity to be firmly attached to the steppe life, and for the urban *Turks to similarly adopt the city lifestyle.

How would this happen?

What are some consequences beyond Eastern Europe/Central Asia?

There were nomadic Slav horseman tribes, namely the Cossacks, so it's definitely plausible. Perhaps if the Kieven Rus never settled down along the riverlands, the turks could move in and subjugate the local Slav groups, eventually progressing in the same manner as early Russia, and you would have plenty more Slavic tribes adopting early Turkic culture.

But the Turks would be more akin to the Varangian/Swedish/Rus part of *Russia - they might well get assimilated (see Bulgaria as an example of Turkic peoples becoming more Slavized).

Yeh this is to be considered... Perhaps if they stuck to the Black Sea and Crimean regions, displacing nomadic Slavs and forming a small Urban civilization. In this scenario, we would have Northwestern Urban Russians, Southwestern Urban Turks and Eastern nomadic Slavs and Turks existing at the same time. At least for a little while, maybe until the Mongols... My money is still on the Russians to eventually gain dominance..

Will anything resembling "Russians" exist in this timeline? The OTL Russian principalities are from a thin trickle of Scandinavians assimilated by Slavs.

Also, what happens with the Volga Bulgars, speaking of urban Turks?

Yeh, but even with this influence the east Slavic languages are definitely still Slavic, still quite similar to Old Church Slavonic... As we mentioned, a contingent of Turks could be a catalyst needed to form Russian Principalities, who end up becoming assimilated, while their southern counterparts retain dominance. We might even see Orthodox Turks

They could still be chillen, Volga Bulgaria is kind of out of anyone's way still.

That would be interesting.

Not sure, though it probably depends on what lead the southern Turkic peoples to settle down. The Ukraine is good grounds for farmers or nomads.
