Turkey joins the Pact of Steel

Through out the Second World War, although remaining neutral Turkey was a strong ally of Germany. I am sure givven a few pokes in the right place Turkey could easily have jioned the Pact of Steel. In say 1940, or during the Iraqi uprising seeing an attempt to restore past glories.

What would be the result of this? A successful Iraqi uprising, Vichy French still in Palestine??? A more easily supplied expedition into North Africa???? A third front for Barbarrosa (I don't think their'd be a Stalingrad had Turkey jioned the pact of Steel - some other big city battle; possibly Leningrad or Moscow but not Stalingrad)

Anyway your opinions please

No. Wasn't the case. Turkey was too smart, and wasn't really that close to Germany.
Plus, Palestine was British territory, not French.
We had a thread about this a few days back. The conclusion was, not bloody likely that Turkey would join the war on either side, in a war that is remotely similar to the OTL one.

~The Doctor~

Let's say an ASB makes the entire Turkish leadership colossal morons.

The end result is either a Turkey split between the Soviets and the Allies, a Turkey completely under the control of the USSR, or a much weakened Turkey, possibly with Greece occupying part of it in the East, and an independent Kurdistan and even Armenia.

Why not declaring war on the UK in 1940 sounds like a great idea. Its isolated, your being supported by the German's who have just crushed everything in their path, the Vichy French are protecting your southern border, in Syria and the Arabs are rebeling against the British in Iraq. Why not jump on the band wagon and reclaim your empire???

In 1941 yes jioning with Hitler may not seem such a good idea. However im proposing an alliance in 1940 when it was only Britain, who'd just been pawned by the Germans and was fighting on in North Africa pretty much alone. Thats a much more appealing target than a nation with an army of 20 million or so.

It was the opposite. Turkey was closer to the Allies, not the Axis - their neutrality was Allied-friendly, and there is really no chance of Turkey joining the Axis voluntarily without a POD that is early enough that there probably wouldn't be a WWII anyway.
