Truman killed in First World War

We've already got several threads about famous politicians with five-letter first names and six-letter last names getting killed in the First World War. Here's another one.
--------
Truman became an officer, and then battery commander in an artillery regiment in France. His unit was Battery D, 129th Field Artillery, 60th Brigade, 35th Infantry Division, known for its discipline problems.[21] During a sudden attack by the Germans in the Vosges Mountains, members started to run away; Truman got them to obey orders using profanities that he had "learned while working on the Santa Fe railroad."[21] Under Captain Truman's command in France, the battery did not lose a single man.[21] His battery also provided support for George S. Patton's tank brigade during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.[22] On November 11, 1918, Truman's artillery unit fired some of the last shots of World War I towards German positions before the armistice took effect at 11 am.[23] The war was a transformative experience that brought out Truman's leadership qualities,[24] and his war record made possible his political career in Missouri.[21]

What happens if this surprise attack by the Germans kills off Truman? It wouldn't be the first time capable officers were killed on the Western Front. Who would FDR pick for Vice President and saddle with the decision to drop the Bomb after FDR's death? What other ramifications would there be?

Well, Roosevelt wanted James Byrnes so my money is on either him, or Roosevelt's second choice William O'Douglas.

My money is on Alben Barkley. Maybe Scott Lucas, but he could be too green.

Assuming we massacre butterflies and everything else proceeds as per OTL, Barkley had a major tax dispute with FDR in 1944 which culminated in a veto override. On FDR's side he saw it as betrayal for his critical help in Barkley's election as Majority Leader over Pat Harrison when Robinson died in '37 and their relationship never really recovered. This happened during the winter, February IIRC. Plus Barkley is older than FDR, which obviously matters when the Veep is guaranteed to acceed at some point in the coming term.

The knock on Lucas is that he's a first termer who's up for reelection but has a decent public profile at this point and a high profile among Dem insiders and base voters. Youthful, energetic, fiery Midwestern New Dealer with an independent streak and blue-collar background- great contrast with FDR. Plus all factions of the party like him, same as Truman and Barkley.

Byrnes has a major religion problem plus is too conservative for labor and northerners, so he's out. McNutt is basically forgotten by this point and FDR still hates his guts, so he's still out. Douglas might not want to leave SCOTUS plus the bosses weren't sold on him so FDR dropped him very early in the process. Rayburn is a Southerner and is probably needed where he is.
