Truman Assassinated in 1950

If Barkley dies in office and gets succeeded by Rayburn, I don't think Rayburn would run reelection. Eisenhower's candidacy could get butterflied away. In OTL, Eisenhower only ran for president due to a strong "Draft Eisenhower" movement.

I think the draft Eisenhower movement is still there no matter what Democrat is in the White House.

I didn't see how Sam Rayburn is getting involved as the president: this is before the amendment calling for the appointment/Senate confirmation of a VP when a vacancy occurs in that office.

In 1947, President Truman signed an act putting the Speaker and then the President Pro Tem right after the VP because there was no VP then, and he felt Rayburn would make a better President than the Secy. of State at the time.

Really just a gut reaction in the same way that the reaction of changing it from the President pro tem and then the Speaker in 18865 to make it the Cabinet members, after the VP died when Cngress was out of session.

I would like to see a TL with Rayburn as president for a while. He would, I feel, jump right back to the House after he completed the term (especially since he, too, was getting up in years) but I think he'd have made a very good leader.
