Troy did not bring the Trojan Horse inside Troy

For the sake of discussion, lets assume that the tale of Greeks building a giant horse which the Trojans brought into their city is true. That night Greek solders hiding in the horse, came out, and opened the gates letting the Greek soldiers into the City. They then burnt the City and killed or enslaved the people.

What if the Trojans had more closely inspected the horse and found the hidden soldiers. They kill the soldiers and burn the horse. Would the Greeks still lay siege to Troy or would they give up?

All over

I seem to recall (very vague, long time ago) that the Greeks burned their tents befre sailing away. That makes resuming the seige rather difficult...

Well from my recollection, the horse was made from the wood of the boats and only the horse remained (so it seemed). The war is basically a Trojan victory unless somehow a message gets to Greece for reenforcements of which is simply not going to happen for some time if at all.

A bit off-topic, but I think that the story of the Horse is a distorted memory of the large wooden siege towers that were used when attempting to take a walled city. We know that Homer incorporated such folk memories, I recall that at one point he mentions what is obviously writing, without understanding its purpose.
