Tropico 3

Might pick it up, played Tropico 1 which was pretty cool and #3 seems pretty cool. Whats not to like as playing as a cartoon dictator.

If I ever get a new machine, I may. As it stands, I get plenty of mileage from the first game. Which is pretty addictive.

I've been thinking of picking this one up also....Never played any of the previous games...How's the military part? I wonder if you get faced with any versions of the Bay of Pigs or Cuban Missile Crisis scenarios.

the first game almost drove me to drink... never did really succeed in it. The army always turned on me... always. No matter what I did for them.

The military aspect in T1 was very much deemphasized - the game is much more about economics, infrastructure, society, and internal politics. I'm not expecting much more out of the military element this time around either, really.

One thing I did hope for that I don't think made it in was an elected Assembly for me to wrangle (the political element was always my favorite part). Apparently the devs had considered it, so maybe it'll make it into an expansion pack. ^_^

The key to controlling the Army is a strong Police force. Have as many (if not more) cops than soldiers, and make sure you always have at least one staffed prison. If a coup breaks out, issue arrest warrants for all of the soldiers that turned against you - that way, ALL of your resources are put toward ending the coup and you don't have to hope the half of the Army still loyal to you can outshoot the plotters.

MWA HA HA HA! Tropico 3, where I get to be a brutal dictator again... odd thing is, every time I played Tropico, the country ended up being the People's Republic of Tropico, with a good deal of tourism. Well, Rule # 7 from the Dictator's Handbook: give the people what they want! It'll shut them up.

There are a few groups I always give top pay to. Early game my foreign-born doctors would be one. The military would be another. Coups would occur every so often, but they would always be outnumbered and crushed by my loyalists.

Yep, it's absolutely important to put your soldiers in the top pay bracket. Another group that has to be paid kinda high is the dockworkers. Not to the level of soldiers or generals, of course, but higher than the other laborers, so you're certain to always have someone willing to fill a role.

So, it looks good, the system specs don't look to bad. I think the military is more of a play thing this time around, not until rts but some of the gameplay shows that you can actually see rebels this time.

About Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile Crisis, I know that you can get money from the US to let them test bombs off the island. And if either the USSR or the US gets pissed enough the Soviets will invade and the Americans will enact a "Regime Change"
