Basing this thread off the earlier post about Franz Ferdinand (FF) surviving, what if he went on to create a triple monarchy of Austria-Hungary-Slavonia? Obviously this would piss off the Hungarians, a people that he had little respect for and a burning desire to humble, but what about the structure of said government? It would likely decrease Hungarian power by chopping off Croatia and unifying it with Bosnia and Slovenia, but how would it actually function? Would it be held together only through the personal power of the monarchy or would there be a unified congress of the three nations? What does this mean for the Ausgleich? Details seem to be sketchy at best from the sources I've seen.
It also appears likely that the Hungarians will vote not to renew the Ausgleich if challenged, which might very well result in a Civil War. Could the Habsburgs afford to let Hungary go and would anyone intervene? Count Tizsa, the Hungarian Prime Minister, though a despot of the worst kind, was a tremendously savvy politician and would likely see the threat of military action if he tried to break away. He personally IMHO would advocate for grinding out as many concessions as possible, but I am not sure that FF would be willing to play these games and might try to force a conflict to break the Hungarian nobility. The easiest way to do so is starting a universal franchise, but as I am unfamiliar with the Hungarian political process at this time, I am not sure FF could operate by decree. It would most likely provoke a war, but the Honved is no match for the Combined Army (which has some Hungarian soldiers too) and the Austrian Landwehr.
But another wrinkle is how the Czechs will react to having a Slavic crown added while not having any extra freedoms thrown their way. Already intransigent over the issue of splitting the Bohemian/Morovian crownlands between German and Czech speaking parts, they might revolt too if the Hungarians go to the knife to solve the situation.
What are opinions on this issue? I might flesh out a timeline from this and need some input from the community.
