Transylvanian republic

I was playing a mind game about an independent Transylvania in the inter- war period. I started to imagine scenarios where Transylvania would have become independent. I then got the idea that if Romania had been a Central Power, they would probably not have got Transylvania, and the Romanian population that was the majority would not want to be a part of Hungary. Perhaps the nations in Versailles would have created Transylvania to limit both Romanian and Hungarian interests.

I'd imagine Transylvania would be a Switzerland like confederated nation, which would at least start as a democracy, and consist of it's 4 nations; the Romanians, the Magyars, the Szeklers and the Germans. The president would be Romanian according to the constitution.

Now I just need to get the Transylvanians to somehow survive Bela Kun's Hungary (i'd imagine both Hungary and Romania would desperately try to invade, perhaps a large entente peace force would be deployed in Transylvania).

You need to strengthen the non-Romanian elements, the easiest way to do that, is Hungarian (and Hungarian German) refugees from Bela Kun's Hungary, later joined by German and Hungarian refugees from Banat and Backa.

The treaty of Bucharest promised Transylvania to Romania if they joined the entente, the POd is they joined the Central Powers, and the entente neither want to reward Romania nor Hungary.

Yes, the refugees are a good idea, still i'd imagine most of the Romanians would want to join Romania while the Magyars would want to join Hungary. The idea is the entente don't want to award nations that have been fighting for the Central Powers and create Transylvania as a way to limit both Romanian and Hungarian influences.

Now I want a way to get rid of that asshole Bela Kun from Hungary without a Romanian invasion.

Romania would only join the CP if they're clearly winning, so that wouldn't work. The easiest way to get this would be ensuring Bolshevik domination in the area. AFAIK Moscow's official line in the inter-war period (and for some years in WWII) called for an independent Transylvania, at least after Bela Kun was overthrown.
