Tragedy Strikes

January 15th 1942

"Graham davis quietly sets up his sniper rifle in an abandoned building with a view of the front of the whitehouse. He reminds himself that this will be for the good of the usa. His proud and great country shouldn't be sending soldiers to die against the japs and nazis. He knows this war will harm his country. At 2:53 Pm he looks through the sights of his sniper rifle at franklin delanor roosevelt. His pulse beats fast so he takes a calming breath and holds it. He fires and watches as roosevelt drops dead to the ground. He lays his gun down and walks to the nearest police station to turn himself in. In his mind he had just saved the country...."

*After the death of Franklin Delanor Roosevelt his Vice President Henry A Wallace is sworn in as the temporary president of the usa until elections are held.*

My question is what do ya'll think will happen next? How does this affect ww2? Can wallace win a presidential election if one is held? Graham davis is a made up name. Idk if this should be ABS or if ya'll will allow it here.

Thats a mighty powerful sniper rilfe and an unnatural accurate marksman to be able to hit the president within the White House from some abandoned building...

What type of person would think killing FDR would stop the US from fighting the Japanese and Nazis after December 7th? Any president taking over, including Wallace would continue fighting. I mean, the Japanese were occupying US soil for crying out loud.

btw, Roosevelt would not drop dead, he was in a wheelchair.. Minor detail i know.

From what I read Henry seemed less war like than Frankie. And he was more peaceful towards the soviets from his description. Would him as a president bring about a less harsh penalty for the japanese when they lose and would he increase relations with the soviets?

Oops. I edited it. Mean't old frankie

Poor FDR, although Wallace should do alright. He's a rather heavily politicised figure in AH with his detractors saying he'd herald a nightmare world and his supporters have him leading the world into a golden age. In reality I feel he'd likely be characterised by the war and its immediate aftermath without having the congressional or international support to do much else.

yeah i don't know all that much about Wallace, but like The Red said he'll do alright for the war. I think his relations with the USSR will breakdown eventually when the USSR refuses to cooperate further in Europe and Japan. Would be kind of interesting to think about how he would handle the nuclear program, alongside the UK. Plus how he would handle Japan when the end comes.

No Henry Wallace is very much the President now until the expiration of that presidential term on January 20th, 1945.

Well, there are a lot of possible knock-ons. Here's one, not widely known:

Wallace's sister was married to the Swiss ambassador to the United States. This gentleman was very pro-Allied, and had Wallace's confidence. In fact Wallace told him a lot of things he should not have. The Ambassador reported what he learned to his government.

These reports were secret, and in cipher. However, German intelligence (the SS Sicherheitsdienst, IIRC, not the Abwehr) had an agent in the mail room of the Swiss foreign ministry, who sent them copies of the ciphered dispatches. And the Germans broke the Swiss diplomatic cipher and read the messages.

Fortunately, FDR left Wallace in the dark about a lot of things, including the most important. And the Germans fumbled the intelligence. (Basically, due to infighting between the spymaster who scored this particular cookie and his rivals, the fruits of the coup were never seriously looked at by the top Nazis.)

But if Wallace became President, he would be privy to everything, including ULTRA, Double-Crosss, and the Manhattan Project. He might have leaked some really critical stuff.

... Wow. Though the question is would Wallace still be spilling information to this Swiss if he became president? Thinking about homeland security. I mean you wouldn't want a president ignoring the warning posters hanging all over the states:
